BALKO 06-02-18 (Live @ Fuse Box, Factory Theatre )

Balko – if they were bottled, you could use them as an energy drink

Gig date: 2nd June 2018

Venue: Fuse Box, Factory Theatre Marrickville, Sydney, Australia

Country of origin: Sydney

Members: Jack, Jordan, Tom and Asher

Support or headline: Support for Maverick (Sydney)

Good crowd/bad crowd: Seemed like everyone was laid back just enjoying their sound and drinking lots. Plus the gig started late so everyone was ‘primed’

Number of times seen band: 1

Crowd participation: They were laid back just listening to the music and drinking. Maybe half of the crowd (possibly a little more than half) knew the words to their songs, so they were singing and dancing. The longer the set went, the more everyone got into it, due to the energy from the band.

Genre: Indie/Rock

Rating: 7/10 guitars

My review:

  • Asher needs to move around while playing Keys more, or at least look up.
  • Tom’s drumming skills are top notch. Good going bro!
  • Songs sound really good
  • Cool sound.
  • You can easily get lost in their voices and in the music in general.

Set List:

  1. Intro/ Town Crier
  2. Stitch Up
  3. Reborn (video I took)
  4. The Evil Dr Zin
  5. The West
  6. Gridlock
  7. Witchcraft by Pendulum (Cover)
  8. Who Knows

BALKO is a band with a unique blend of Indie-edge and garage rock. With an extremely energetic lead singer and lead guitarist, coupled with a thumping drummer and wistful keyboards; these guys put in the effort! Not to mention the hair-fest to accompany most songs. (a photographers dream btw, see my photos below)

I really liked the set last night, I especially loved Who Knows and Reborn two totally different tracks, but both have a great melody that instantly makes them feel like familiar songs. They have played shows across Sydney at The Oxford Art Factory and the Lansdowne. Keep an eye and ear out for these boys and any new music they release.
