Burnt Palms – Fold

The Seaside, California-residing, indie-pop/rock quartet Burnt Palms will deliver its third album, Back On My Wall, February 5th on We Were Never Being Boring Records (Hmmm, a nod to the Pet Shop Boys, perhaps?).

If lead single Fold is any indication, the upcoming album will be chock full of engaging female vocals, madly dashing distorted guitar runs, dynamic drum patterns, and perceptive lyrics about relationships and the like.

Fold opens up with a careening and fuzzy buzz of guitar grind (from Riley and Joshua), lean bass line (by Brian), and rapid-fire drum beat and sporadic cymbal crashes (courtesy of Clara). Riley and Clara then trade and sometimes twin on the vocal lines, sing-talking with a sweet and casual ease bleak lyrics like “I have nothing to hold on to / There’s no meaning without you.” The speedy pop-punk tempo, brief runtime of under two minutes, and Riley and Clara’s melodic voces make the tune fly by with a breezy cheerfulness despite its downer subject matter.
