Dance With Joey EP Out January 2027 via Mendel
Midwest-born, Los Angeles based indie pop artist Joey Nebulous today has announced his new EP Dance With Joey, due out January 2027 via Mendel. The announcement is accompanied by the release of playful, sentimental lead single “Dance With Him.” The track arrives alongside a fun, freaky Nick Pillot-directed music video.
“I began writing this track in 2023, when Paul Mescal’s Gucci ad kept popping up on Instagram,” he explains. “His lackadaisical dance moves inspired the tune’s repetitive chorus, where Joey imagines a brief, waltz-focused encounter with an A-list celebrity. The music video came together when I saw a pink, monstrous puppet in Jackie Smook’s apartment, which she built for a horror film that ended up passing on it. With help from directors Nick Pillot and Sarah Ritter, the ‘Dance With Him’ music video incorporates puppeteering and miniature model building for a silly celebration of romance and fantasy.”
Joey Nebulous embraces the sweeter, messier side of pop on Dance With Joey, inspired by indie rock legends like Pavement and The Magnetic Fields and the earworm nature of pop stars like Charli XCX and Kim Petras. Moving between yearning for fame and success and celebrating the joys of everyday existence, Dance With Joey reflects the complexities of queer life through humor, introspection, and unabashed pleasure.
The EP was produced and mixed by Nick Levine (Jodi) in their home studio, with Henry Stoehr (Slow Pulp) serving as the primary producer on the lead single “Dance With Him,” which Levine also co-produced. The track also features effervescent vocals from longtime Joey Nebulous member Margaret McCarthy (Moontype), while Scoops Dardaris handled mastering for the EP.
“Dance With Him” is out now.
