Alwyn Morrison Releases Sophomore EP
Shares “Monster” New Single + Video
Trial EP Out Now via All DSPS and Vinyl
New York City singer-songwriter Alwyn Morrison returns with “Monster,” the focus track from his sophomore EP, Trial, out October 23rd via All DSPS and available on vinyl. The emotionally charged track explores the experience of feeling judged and condemned for the choices we make, ultimately taking on a meaning that extends beyond Morrison’s own story.
Since 2024, Morrison has written and produced nearly 90 songs, yet found himself repeatedly returning to the same four tracks. While much of his earlier work, including his 2025 debut EP Heartsplit, centered on love and heartbreak, these songs felt different. They explored life itself, touching on betrayal, pain, self-defense, and survival. Together, they began to feel like a trial.
“Monster” sits at the center of that progression, capturing the feeling of being put on trial for falling in love with the “wrong person” and being made to feel like a monster as a result. What began as an intensely personal song took on a broader meaning when two of Morrison’s friends heard the demo and connected with it through their own experiences.
“This song is about a very difficult time in my life. I never thought about releasing this track, not even about recording it. Two friends of mine heard my demo and felt so connected to the song, even though their life experiences are so different from mine,” Morrison explains. “The song was bigger than my story about feeling ‘put on trial’ for falling in love with the ‘wrong person’ and being seen by everyone as a monster. One day I was in the studio working on other songs and, after wrapping up everything we were recording that day, my co-writer Mike Ales kept insisting that I record this song. It took a while to get here, but now I can listen to it and know, deep down, that my audience will connect to it. Whatever these lyrics mean to someone else.”
The four tracks on Trial gradually revealed an unexpected courtroom structure to Morrison. The concept was never intentional, but as he continued listening to the songs in sequence, their progression began to resemble the stages of a trial. “Puzzle Piece” opens like a Charging Document with the line “By life betrayed,” followed by a second track that serves as a Pretrial Motion, closing with “Can’t you see? Everybody bleeds.” “Monster” takes the role of a Verdict Form, centering on the question of judgment, while “Fireflies” closes the EP like a Final Court Order with the line “No fear in our eyes.”
The courtroom imagery also reflects a period in Morrison’s own life. In 2025, he spent time in a New York City courtroom supporting friends through difficult circumstances, an experience he believes may have subconsciously shaped how he came to understand the songs as they took form as a collection.
Produced and recorded in New York City, Trial marks a shift from the romantic themes of Morrison’s debut EP, Heartsplit, toward more personal reflections on life, growth, and survival. Though love remains a recurring thread, the songs ultimately examine what happens when the struggle is no longer about another person, but about navigating life itself.
“Monster” and Trial are out now, with a limited vinyl release, mastered by Justin Shturtz (Morgan Wallen, Zac Brown Band), exclusively on Morrison’s website.
